Inverleith Park say it in lights!

The save the Inverleith Park Campaign team, Myself, James Gibson (the photographer) and the KSLD team worked together to create some publicity shots.

We aimed to highlight what we love about the park, and what we see in the future for the depot site which the council plan to sell.

The Friends of Inverleith Park are protesting against the City of Edinburgh Council’s plans to sell off a corner of the park for a luxury housing development.

Locals say that the site has long been a part of the public park and are campaigning to save the space for community use. The lighting event brought together members of the local community, explored alternative uses for the site and highlighted what the community value about their park.

The Council describes the site, near the children’s play park, as a “surplus property asset” and intend to file a planning application for 7 luxury private homes on this site.

“Once this land is sold it is lost to the people of Edinburgh forever” said Tony Cook, Convener of the Friends of Inverleith Park.

Fantastic light painting by the 6 volunteers. This shot is taken infront on the Inverleith Park Depot Site which the council plan to sell.  The campaign group would like to save it for community use for example, a shared community garden where we can grow stuff together and kids can learn about the natural world!

Here we are trying to make the message a litle more obvious. DONT SELL IT!

Many members of the facebook campaign group liked the idea of a cafe. Our three lovely cafe ladies model a beautiful cardboard tea set here.

City farm, community garden, cafe.. anything but private housing!

Natalie and Martin from KSLD orchestrated  40 volunteers in some seriously synchronised guerrilla lighting of the sundial garden which borders the depot site. Ideally the sundial garden and the depot site would be connected as one big community space.

Some lovely close ups of the guerilla tree lighting.

Inverleith Park was bought by the city father’s from the Rocheid Estate in 1889, and is a premier city park, part of the Inverleith Conservation area. The site in question is currently used as a Park’s depot, but was originally used as a plant nursery area.
